Who Pays When a Rock Shatters Your Windshield

image of silver carBelow are some shocking numbers.  Between 2011 and 2014, 200,000 accidents transpired on US roads due to debris, in accordance with AAA.  This led in 500 people perishing and 39,000 injured.  Sometimes, car insurance may help pay for the expense.  However, if a rock hits your window, who's covered?  There are lots of circumstances which may apply.

Where did the rock originate?

Rocks are found on every road.  In well-maintained locations, they are sometimes a high-risk concern.  But, it's perhaps not always somebody's fault if a rock strikes your window.  Here are just two examples.
You're driving down a country.  A stone spins up from the road as a truck drives by and hits your windshield.  The glass shatters.  In cases like this, it's nobody's fault.  The rock originated from the road.
Now imagine a cement truck drives by and a stone from the bed of this truck strikes your windshield.  In cases like this, the stone originated out of the car or truck.  And, in this circumstance, the automobile operator might be at fault. Their auto insurance policy would likely pay for the loss. In most conditions, however, it's very tough to establish where the rock originated. Even in the event that you see that the rock came from another car and not the road, it's almost impossible to prove this.

What Do You Need to Do?
When you have auto insurance through Armar Insurance, speak to your agent and share what happened.  If you're certain that the damage resulted from some other driver's actions or inactions, attempt to gather evidence to support your claim or file a police report.  Once you have gathered evidence, and wish to file a claim, you will still likely be subject to your policy deductible.

If you happened to be in Sacramento, CA, Yreka, CA or Minneapolis MN, and have questions about glass claims on your Auto Insurance policy, please contact us.
